Every year on 24th July, International Self-Care Day lands as a gentle nudge to all of us to think about how well we are looking after ourselves. The date is deliberate. 24/7. A reminder that self-care is not a one-off treat or something you fit in when life slows down. It is something that needs to happen every day, around the clock, in the small and ordinary moments as much as the big ones.
For physiotherapists, that message can feel almost ironic.
You spend your working life helping people recover, rebuild strength, and get back to doing the things that matter to them. Movement, rehabilitation, and physical wellbeing are your professional language. And yet the people who understand better than most what it takes to keep a body and mind healthy are often the last to apply that knowledge to themselves.
This International Self-Care Day, we want to change that.
What self-care actually means
Self-care has developed an unfortunate reputation in recent years. It gets associated with bubble baths and scented candles, with expensive wellness products and aspirational social media posts that have very little to do with the reality of a full clinical day.
Real self-care is much simpler and much more important than that.
It is drinking enough water during your working day. It is taking your lunch break even when the caseload is relentless. It is saying no when you have already given everything you have. It is asking for help before you reach the point of crisis. It is getting enough sleep, moving your body in ways that feel good, and maintaining connections with the people who matter to you outside of work.
None of that is indulgent. All of it is essential.
Why physiotherapists are particularly at risk of neglecting it
There is a certain irony in a profession built around physical and functional wellbeing producing professionals who routinely neglect their own. But it happens, and it happens for understandable reasons.
The demands of a physiotherapy caseload are significant. Emotionally, physically, and cognitively. Burnout among physiotherapists is not a personal failing. It is the predictable result of consistently giving more than is sustainable without adequate rest, support, and recovery. Research shows that healthcare professionals who neglect their own wellbeing are more likely to experience compassion fatigue, make clinical errors, and ultimately step back from the profession entirely.
Looking after yourself is not selfish. It is what makes it possible to keep doing the work you love.
Some self-care practices that actually work for physiotherapists
You already know the theory. You teach it to your patients every day. Here are some reminders of what it looks like in practice for you:
- Protect your sleep. Long and physically demanding days take a toll that accumulates over time. A consistent wind-down routine and being firm about protecting your rest time are worth investing in
- Move in ways you enjoy, not just ways that feel productive. Physiotherapists can fall into the trap of treating their own exercise as another clinical task. Find something you do purely because it feels good
- Stay connected. It is easy when work is demanding to let friendships and relationships outside of it drift. Maintaining those connections takes effort but it matters enormously for your long term wellbeing
- Set boundaries around work. Finding a ritual that helps you mentally switch off at the end of the day, whether that is a podcast on the commute home, a change of clothes, or a short walk, can make a real difference over time
- Know your warning signs. Everyone has early indicators that they are running low. Learn yours and take them seriously before they escalate into something bigger
A reminder worth keeping
You chose physiotherapy because you wanted to help people get better. That instinct is a gift. But it needs to be sustained, and the only way to sustain it is to make sure you are also on your own list of people to look after.
This International Self-Care Day, do one thing for yourself. Just one. And then tomorrow, do it again.
At JustPhysio, we genuinely care about the physiotherapists we work with. Whether you are looking for a locum placement or a permanent role, we take the time to find you something that fits not just your skills but your life.
