The Occupational Therapy Adaptation Conference (OTAC) was held in Leeds earlier this month, offering professionals the chance to hear interesting speakers and network with others in the industry.

It took place on April 24th at the Weetwood Hall Estate and was well-attended by occupational therapists, assistants, students, commissioners, housing associations and charities.

The focus of the day was on adaptations and equipment to help development the knowledge for them to be used in day-to-day practice.

Four different spaces meant lots of topics could be covered at the same time and attendees were able to select the sessions that were most interesting to them.

Topics in Theatre 1 ranged from a client centred approach to bathing through to flexible environments for healthcare, all delivered by a selection of experts in each field.

Highlights offered in Theatre 2 included practical assessments for home adaptations and how modular shower chairs can address a client’s needs.

Paul Smith, director of Foundations, which is the body that oversees a national network of nearly 200 home improvement agencies (HIAs) and handyperson providers across England, was also in attendance.

He was running workshops and surgeries throughout the day to discuss good practice and burning issues.

A dedicated Moving and Handling Theatre covered areas like bed migration and assessing clients for a stairlift.

Between sessions, visitors were able to browse stands set up by companies and organisations that work with occupational therapists.

OTAC has a busy schedule for 2019, with nine events in the calendar. The next one is at Exeter Racecourse, with others lined up in Cambridge, Reading, Southampton, Newcastle, Kent and Cardiff later in the year.
