Physiotherapy 'a rewarding career'
Tuesday 2nd March 2010
The satisfying nature of a job in physiotherapy has been highlighted by one person in the field.
Emma Barron, who works with stroke victims at Bishop Auckland Hospital, described her experiences of the career to the Northern Echo.
She explained that people can lose much of their muscle strength very quickly, with a long time needed for it to be built back up.
And with physios often working with patients from the bedside and gradually getting them to the point where they can enter the gym, Ms Barron said: "Physiotherapy is a very rewarding and satisfying job. We take most of our patients home and they are so happy. It gets quite emotional."
Matron of the hospital's rehabilitation unit Sue Henderson told the news source of changes being made, with the facility going from having 17 beds to 36.
According to the NHS, more than 111,000 people in England have a stroke each year.
