Cricketer announces decision to become physio

A professional cricketer has announced he will now be using his hands to keep his colleagues in shape rather than to catch the ball.

Jamie Pipe is retiring from playing the game as a wicketkeeper with Derbyshire and is instead taking over as the club's physio, the Derby Telegraph reports.

The 31-year-old, who joined the club from Worcestershire in 2006, will take over from Australian David Beakley, who is returning home to work at his country's national academy.

"Me and my wife, Emma, are happy and settled in the area and this way, I can move on to the next stage of my career at a club where I know I will enjoy working," he said.

He explained that he had been unable to turn down the post after it was offered him by the club's head of cricket John Morris.

Derbyshire play at the County Ground in Derby, which has twice hosting matches when the cricket World Cup has been played in England, in 1983 and 1999.
