Plans for new medical centre being considered

Councillors in the East Yorkshire town of Beverley are to consider plans this week to build a new medical facility in place of Westwood Hospital.

The centre, which would feature 30 beds, would offer an array of health services if approved, including x-ray, ultrasound, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy, the Yorkshire Post reports.

There is opposition to the hospital because of plans to develop it on green belt land; however, East Riding Council's director of planning and regeneration is recommending that it should go ahead unless new issues come to light.

Alan Menzies commented: "There are significant material considerations that weigh in favour of developing a new community hospital at this site and subject to the imposition of appropriate conditions the proposal is considered to be acceptable."

Approximately 325,000 people are served by NHS East Riding of Yorkshire, which is behind the plans. The East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust's replacement argues that a new facility is needed as Westwood Hospital is not suitable for renovation.
