Physiotherapists issue health warning

A professional body for physiotherapists has issued a warning over the health of Britons.

According to a survey conducted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), 63 per cent of respondents said they were not getting enough exercise.

These people, the society said, could be putting themselves at greater risk of life threatening diseases, such as strokes, heart disease and cancer.

In order to raise awareness of the importance of physical exercise, the CSP has launched a campaign entitled Move for Health.

The nationwide initiative aims to encourage people to be more physically active.

Commenting on the issue, secretary of state for health Andy Burnham said: "Active people are up to 50 per cent less likely to be at risk of major chronic disease such as coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer."

Not enough people are doing the recommended 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, he added.

A member-led organisation, the CSP provides a range of services for its members and campaigns on behalf of people operating in the physiotherapy profession.
