Physiotherapists harness technology to help young patients
Thursday 18th June 2009
In a bid to enhance the treatment of young arthritis sufferers, physiotherapists in a Scottish hospital have harnessed technology.
According to reports in the Aberdeen Press and Journal, staff members at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin are using a Nintendo Wii Fit as an aid.
The console is said to encourage the children to complete their daily exercise.
Commenting on the initiative, paediatric physiotherapist Susan Fraser said: "I think this is a great way to treat children.
"They are often in a lot of pain when they come here and focussing on the Wii helps to takes their mind off it."
Meanwhile, Gina Sutherland, the mother of one of the patients who attends the medical centre, said the Nintendo Wii Fit will probably encourage her daughter to attend the physiotherapy sessions.
With a history dating back to 1807, Dr Gray's Hospital provides a range of services, including obstetrics, opthamology and paediatrics.
