Physiotherapy used to treat Parkinson's sufferers

People with Parkinson's disease have been undergoing physiotherapy in Bath.

The city's Parkinson's Disease Society has been holding monthly sessions during which members are offered a range of exercises designed to keep their joints supple and to improve their general fitness, the Bath Chronicle reports.

During the meetings, physiotherapist Gay Moore also provides advice about specific problems associated with the condition, which is a degenerative disease of the brain that affects the nerve cells involved with movement.

Meanwhile, attendees also take part in a five minutes of dancing, since movement to music has been found to help sufferers improve their rhythm when walking.

Retired GP Dileas Sweetenham, who has Parkinson's and is the chairman of the Bath group, said: "I believe exercise keeps our bodies in use - if you don't use it, you lose it. The exercise keeps me supple."

The sessions are held on a monthly basis at a local church.
