Surgeon to raise cash for physiotherapy unit
Friday 6th March 2009
A surgeon is to participate in a fundraising event in order to generate money for a new physiotherapy unit, it has emerged.
Dr John Cashman, who used to work at the Royal United Hospital, is to take part in the Cape Epic mountain bike race to raise cash for facilities at his new medical centre in Malawi, the Bath Chronicle reports.
As part of the race, he will complete 600 miles off-road at high altitude.
His wife said: "Our recent decision to remain in Malawi and forego the opportunity to return to his NHS consultancy that he so much enjoyed, reflects the gravity of need here in this region of Africa."
She added that the hospital is in "desperate need" of a new physiotherapy facility and operating theatre.
Recently, it was revealed that amputees at the Royal Free Hospital are staying in hospital after their treatments for an average of 63 less time after their operations thanks to improvements in their physiotherapy and other treatment, the Times-Series reports.
