Physiotherapists use Wii-hab in hospital
Tuesday 17th February 2009
People with physiotherapy jobs at a hospital in Bridgend are using a technique they have dubbed "Wii-hab".
Barry Underwood, who is employed at the Princess of Wales Hospital, has been helping patients regain their flexibility with the help of a Nintendo Wii, the Ely Standard reports.
The medical worker got the idea for the treatment after reading an article in the Physiotherapy Journal on the potential benefits for using the console to assist people's rehabilitation.
He said: "I thought that it would be fun for our patients as therapy can get a little boring and repetitive at times."
The equipment was purchased with the help of donations to the ward.
According to Mr Underwood, if the use of the console continues to be a success, it may be rolled out to wider therapy sessions.
The Princess of Wales Hospital is run by the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust, which describes itself as one of the largest hospital trust in Wales.
