Physiotherapists to offer new treatment for rare condition
Wednesday 4th February 2009
A number of people with physiotherapy jobs in Essex are to begin offering patients who suffer from a rare condition a new treatment.
People with fibromyalgia - a chronic condition which causes pain all over the body and affects the muscles, tendons and ligaments - will benefit from the development.
A new programme lasting for eight weeks is being piloted by South West Essex Community Services at Basildon University Hospital.
It will be available to patients across the districts of Brentwood, Thurrock and Basildon.
Led by physiotherapists, the scheme will provide support concerning the management of the condition and advice about symptoms, treatment options and relaxation.
"If the pilot scheme is a success we hope to run the group programme on a more permanent basis," said Claire Rumble, senior physiotherapist for NHS South West Essex Community Services.
She added that the initiative is designed to provide sufferers with a better quality of life.
