Medical jobs 'set to beat the downturn'

People on the lookout for UK medical jobs may be interested in the results of a new survey from the US, which identified several health-related professions among its list of the 30 best careers in the rapidly-changing world economy.
The study, cited by US News and World Report, said the ageing of the baby boomer generation is creating extra demand and new opportunities for a "broad swath" of healthcare workers. The UK has a similar demographic trend towards an ageing population.
According to the poll, physical therapy will be one of the areas requiring new recruits as more older people means more will need help recovering from knee and hip operations.
Other key growth areas include nursing and biomedical equipment technicians.
Pharmacists are also seeing their sector grow as an older population has a greater reliance on medication to stay healthy.
Another profession with a brighter outlook is audiology, which involves working with the fast-moving technology behind hearing aids.
"These careers have staying power: They're smart moves now, and they'll be smart moves for years to come," the magazine said.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 22 per cent of the UK population will be aged 65 or over by 2031.
