Speech therapists to be involved in new fast-track clinic
Wednesday 5th November 2008
Speech therapists are set to be among the medical professionals working at a new fast-track clinic to treat sufferers of motor neurone disease (MND), it has emerged.
The facility, which will be created in the north Liverpool suburb of Fazakerley, will provide a one-stop clinic for sufferers of the condition, the Liverpool Echo reports.
As well as speech therapists, the Walton centre will house a range of other specialists, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
"The new clinic will offer a fast-track route around the complicated and time-consuming path to receiving proper care and advice," stated Professor Carolyn Young, who is behind the initiative.
She added that the centre will enable patients to visit one place and be seen by all the relevant medical professionals.
Currently, they have to receive a referral from their GP, be diagnosed at the Walton centre, get an appointment to see a specialist nurse and then wait for further appointments with other doctors.
