New physiotherapy initiative introduced in Lancashire
Friday 24th October 2008
A number of hospitals in Lancashire have introduced a novel physiotherapy treatment to help the recovery of patients, it has emerged.
In news which may be particularly relevant to people with physiotherapy jobs, the treatment makes use of the Nintendo Wii computer.
The idea was arrived at by 12-year-old Nathan Ellis, who had begun 12 months of intensive physiotherapy to help him regain mobility following a car accident, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
He asked whether he could use the Wii Fit computer game as a method of treatment.
It proved so successful that staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust bought two consoles complete with the games.
"We provide a paediatric and adolescent physiotherapy service. One of our patients suggested it would be a good idea and a new and fun way to get youngsters to undertake physiotherapy," stated Lesley Walters, head of physiotherapy at the trust.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides services to a population of 370,000.
