Speech therapists involved in stammering project

Speech therapists are among a group of people with UK medical jobs to be involved with a scheme to help youngsters who suffer from stammers.

Designed to assist people with the problem in south Essex, the project centres around a course designed to help boost confidence.

According to a report in the Essex Echo, speech and language therapists at Hadleigh Clinic have been running week-long summer courses.

The sessions are informal and use games such as Consequences to help build up attendees' confidence about speaking in front of other people.

"What's really nice about doing it in groups is they meet people in the same situation, who are going through the same things at school - maybe having the mickey taken out of them for their stammer," stated course organiser Jenny Packer.

Last month, a new team of medical professionals, including occupational therapists, physiotherapists and a speech therapist, began offering a new service to people in Bath who suffer from brain injuries and long-term neurological problems, the BBC reported.
