Locum in the Spotlight November

Monday 21st November 2011

Each month JustPhysio would like to recognise one of our locums for their personal achievement and commitment to the Physiotherapy service.

Name: Ayana Reid

Profession: Physiotherapist

Where are you from? I was born in New York, raised in Arizona, went to graduate school in Florida and most recently moved to the UK from Dallas Texas.

Current Locum position?
Band 6 Community Neuro Physiotherapist (Early Supported Discharge Team for Strokes)

What do you like about your job?
The ability to make a difference in the life of another in the intimacy and security of their own home is empowering. My patients inspire and give me energy. Each one of my patients presents with varying levels of functional limitations, disabilities, and impairments regardless of diagnoses. In addition to neurological impairments, many of them have multi-system dysfunction and cognitive issues. I love working in the community because it allows me the opportunity to not only see how the patient adapts in their own living environment, but it also challenges me to be effective at developing an individualized plan of care that is goal focused and patient-centred. I also love being a community physiotherapist because it gives me the opportunity to be creative, imaginative and innovative.

Personal achievements within your role?
The ability to transition into a new nation and work under a different healthcare system has been challenging yet achievable. My education, work experience and training that I have received back in the states have prepared me to make a valuable contribution towards the delivery of care. From my experience with the electrical muscle stimulator (EMS), I have been able to provides in-services for other clinicians and even train the patients on how to apply the device on themselves. I have been successful at utilising my training and successful in encouraging other clinicians to include the electrical stimulation machine in their plan of care for it is proven to be effective in improving functional clinical outcomes.

How do you unwind from work?
I have always been passionate about dance and enjoy Latin, modern, ballet and praise dancing in my spare time. I also unwind by working out at the gym, travelling and reading inspirational faith-based books.
